University accommodation halls – What to bring with you

Many young adults move from their home country to study abroad. Why? There are plenty of reasons: independence, freedom, better education quality, better opportunities…They just pack their stuff, go to the airport and start a new life.

But where do these guys live while study? Some students choose flats or houses to share with friends/partner, others prefer students accommodation universities provide us with. Accommodation life is full of surprises and unexpected discoveries, so it is useful to have a list of things to carry with you ‘just in case’.

1.   Hangers

Of course, you will need hangers for your wardrobe, because accommodation halls don’t provide you with such luxury. I recommend you not to buy too many and it’s also useless to buy some high-quality ones (because London is so expensive). Go to Poundland (https://www.poundland.co.uk/) – you can find nearly everything there.

2.   Door hooks

Speaking for myself, I need more hooks for my jackets, coats, scarfs etc. than four. So, I bought doors hooks to solve this problem. You hang them on the bathroom door and thus don’t damage the walls. There are plenty of them on the internet (Ebay, for instance), but you can find some at IKEA as well.

3.   String lights/table lamp

Accommodation halls have two types of light: a kind of chandelier on the ceiling and a lamp above the desk. If you like to read or simply don’t like bright light in the room, you need to bring some kind of table lamp with you or buy it. I bought string lights – they create a special atmosphere in the room and provide me with the light I need for reading in bed. You can hang them with tape on the wall, so it won’t damage anything. There is a variety of string lights on ebay.co.uk.

4.   Warm blanket

A really warm blanket! You never know what could happen to your radiator. During my first winter in halls I felt very cold and the radiator wasn’t helping me much. It wasn’t broken or turned off, but it was situated at such a bad place (near the door) so the warmth from it wasn’t going to the room. So again, you never know what will happen, so bring a warm blanket with you just in case.
